The background of the chapter is essentially "The Primarch Batman" and these guys love darkness and causing fear.

They have a simple dark/night blue scheme, with lighting done as you wish over the surface. They also love symbols of death, skulls, spikes, blood etc, even more than is normal for 40k.

How does this sound?Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-82046129646114620972011-03-03T20:24:00.000-08:002011-03-03T20:24:12.549-08:00So what do you really want from your 40k Army?Let's see what you want the most!
Put each of the following in order of importance:

1) Winning, Fluff, Expense, Ease of Generalship & Modelling.

2) Undivided, Tzeentch, Nurgle, Slaneesh, Khorne

3) Balanced, Assault, Shooting.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-47900196012656882682011-03-02T22:12:00.000-08:002011-03-03T14:54:59.787-08:00Recent games reportsSui and I have been playing an informal series of Handicapped games of 40k. On the back of my recent painting frenzy, I felt like having some games using my favourite figures. They have some pretty out of date codex, so we handicapped the games to allow each of respective wishes to shine - Sui wants to win and improve his list, and I wanted to play my favourite figures.

Game 1: Bart Thousand Sons V Sui's Successor Blood Angels
Handicap: 0 Game:"pop the objectives' - Each objective is checked, and has a table d6: 1 - Explodes: 2-5 - not an objective, 6 - this is an objective.
After Sui's traditional turn one spending everything he can gunning down the Tzeentchian Winged Demon Prince, He sent other units onto objectives. Nothing exploded, but none of them was the objective, either. Only two left. I sent my three Rhinos with 7 1k sons each towards the against the far objective, and kept my 20 Havocks w/ 4 missile launchers stuck next to my setup base, which also had a objective nearby.

In turn three, Sui's Dreadnaught shot open a Rhino and charge the Thousand Sons within, and imobilised another Rhino. The only chance of dropping the Dreadnaught was with a melta bombs or scratch and dents, and the Sorcerer couldn't roll a six, and the Dreadnaught had trouble getting through invulnerable saves. Sui's squad popped the penultimate objective, to be disappointed. Firstly by the lack of the objective, and secondly by the way the inferno bolts hosed away his troops. The objective was now just behind my base.

Over the next two turns, the Terminators weathered the fire, while the vehicles did not. The Thousand sons meandered back to the critical battle line, and my surprise Character popped out. Tzeentchian Chaos Lord with Demon weapon. He charged the Terminators just as they reached the base, and was consumed, but after the Terminator threat was abated, and the Havocks held the objective. 1-0.

Game 2: Bart Thousand Sons V Sui's Successor Blood Angels
Handicap: Sui 5% Game: Regular Objectives.
The mighty Sorcerer Lord Ahriman came forth in might! In his first five psychic tests, three were 12, killing him! The Rhino push to Sui's base fell apart after this. The defensive Havocks did nothing! The Chaos Lord killed well, but not nearly enough to stem the tide. A win to Sui, with his base contested, and mine taken. 1-0

Game 3: Bart Thousand Sons attacking Sui's Successor Blood Angels

Handicap: Bart 5% Game: Planetstrike basic mission.
My initial Bombardment wiped out the quad gun emplacement on the central bastion, and took out about three marines. I bought a good compliment on, with Two rhinos racing on, and the Demon Prince popping a Vindicator with it's Bolt of Tzeentch. His counter fire was effective at immobilizing the rhinos, and my fire was effective at thinning the lines. Later his Terminators Deep struck to a point of my choosing - I relegated them to my deployment quarter and then had them rumble with the Chaos Lord. Slow and purposeful was great at thinning the lines, but Sui had too much to throw at them. When the game ended at turn 5, I was inside the compound, but not touching the objective. Planet defended by Sui.

Game 4: Bart Genestealer Cult defending against Sui's Successor Blood Angels:
Handicap: Bart 10% Game: Planetstrike basic mission
It was a glorious mess, in that Genestealer cult way, with some fun matchups. Leman Russ blows gun off Vindicator, but can't take Multimelta to the read from a Dreadie. Jump squad take on Demolition charge Brood Brothers and loose four, before jumping into the next lot and loosing the rest of the Squad except for Azeroth the grim. Five Terminators were quite sure they could take on the Initiates coming their way, but were surprised and overwhelmed by the Hybrid Monstrosity that rolled into them from behind. The Comrade Platoon holding the centre put out relatively disciplined fire, but could not put down the Terminators, who seemed impervious to lasfire. The Genestealers burst of of the bastion, but not in time to knock off the various attackers. The game ended with the Genestealers rumbling with the razorback squad, the Primarch on the back of a Dreadnaught, and the sole surviving terminator rumbling with the remnants of three infantry squads.
bastion assaulted, with another win to Sui.

Next Game - I'll take the Tau out for a meander, with 15% headstart!Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-15298744131589976742011-03-02T19:39:00.000-08:002011-03-02T19:39:58.778-08:00Balancing 40k - HandicapsBlanket statements: Not all Warhammer 40k codex are balanced. Not all Warhammer generals are balanced. Not all army composers are created equal. The question then becomes: What to do about it? The general principle in the community semes to be 'let the older codex rot, let the poorer generals suffer.'

Well I come from a sports background, where they deal with much greater numbers that 40k tournaments, and to keep the spirit of competition alive, and to make individual matchups more exciting, they have handicaps and grades.

Golf handicaps are the most obvious comparison - You play against yourself to obtain a numbered score. If you get the course suggested score (usually 72), your handicap is zero. If you play poorly, your handicap goes up. Just say you have a handicap of 10, you can play a game against someone with a handicap of zero. You compete to beat 82, they compete to beat 72, and you efforts can be compared.

Sui and I are playing a basic handicap campaign. Each loss means the looser gets a handicap of 5% army composition per loss. A win reset the handicap.

One of the main questions is: What does the winner get? More opponents and a broader experience of different armies. They get the considerable satisfaction of a win, and they get to fight a harder game against weaker opponents - which will hone their skill.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-40807958164322613772010-09-19T20:40:00.000-07:002010-09-19T20:40:28.108-07:00Teaching Miniature Painting TechniqueTom has two youngsters keen on painting their Warhammer figures, and he will be doing his army as well. So I thought I would give him some insights on how to paint, and then some strong suggestions on using the simplest techniques in order to get the most figures done with the least time.

I came loaded with brushes and figures, as Tom advised me that he had paint. I brought my fave colour, Rackham Bone, and tom had a little mix of GW Foundation Blue & Grey, Scortched Brown, Regal Blue, and Ice Blue.

The first lesson were the very basics. Keep the paint on the bottom third of the brush. Keep your paints water thinned. Have a rubbish transfer and mix brush to your pallet. Have a tissue box/ Kitchen paper roll around for cleaning and wiping. Clean water, mix water and bin in easy reach. Clean your brushes well between each colour change. No warm water as it melts the wax in the ferrule. Shape your tip. Have an upside down brush in your wash water to 'rub' your bristles clean.

Then we got into the painting. How to load a colour and use one or two brush loads of water to thin it. How to mix a darker colour and then work towards lightness for highlighting.

I showed Tom how to drybrush, and how opacity affects highlighting.

The Regal blue did not want to apply nicely, so after a correction I showed Tom how to turn it into a wash.

At the end of the two hour session, Tom had the basics down pat, and using only the colours he had I showed him how to make and effective batch process to paint the Lizardmen and the Skinks.

Once he has these done, we will get him going on his Skaven, and then once the skills have developed, it might be time to get the High Elves painted.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-4487321617102963372010-09-15T17:42:00.000-07:002010-09-15T17:42:28.689-07:00The Skaven emergeTom has decided on his army, and has gone for the rat men, the Skaven. One battalion box, and a heap of gear grabbed from the gamers friends, WargamerAu & ebay.

For the game Tom had 1500 points, Jez had 750 Orcs, and I had 750 points of Empire.

It was a good romp, close most of the way, with the "Unlikely Alliance" putting down the ratties. Dropping a Rat horde was difficult, as those stubborn rolls meant that it took the humans some serious chopping, but I had three tight frontage units facing his horde sized effort. Jez's Black Orcs had a hard job, dislodging a horde by itself. It was saved by a traffic jam preventing flanking attacks over the time that it took to kill the ratties.

Funny stuff:
- the slave rat explosion was one of the most effective tactics of the day - Tom is priming his brush for slave painting a plenty.
- Animosity - The goblins were NOT interested in attending the battle. When the Black Orc's went screaming off with a Warggghh roll, both gobbos stayed stock still. And the next turn. The centre unit woke up once it was slammed into by the slave rats on their turn three, but the other one had FOUR rolls of one in a row - staying dead still on the starting line.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-31955937931041898552010-08-16T20:35:00.000-07:002010-08-16T20:35:51.961-07:00Painting progressFriday night fight was skipped this week as A. & I were seeing "Deep Blue Orchestra".

I have not been slack, far from it - I have had the painting urge strike. 30 Gretchin, 8 Orks and 16 Sarus Lizardmen have gone from plastic to waiting for basing. I was doing a couple of hours at the end of the night, perched in my usual spot behind the Teev while the others watch their programs, L. watching ABC3 until 8.30, and then more adult stuff once L. was in bed.

I was amused by the timing of the BOLS article on Army Painter quickshade, as I was prepping my Saurus for just that treatment when I read the article. If you like painting armies fast, it's a great article. My only alteration to that article - I always paint the dip on - less mess, less wastage.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-83188029681660790702010-08-12T22:23:00.001-07:002010-08-12T22:23:59.339-07:00Friday night fight delayed due to cultureA friend is down from QLD and playing in "Deep Blue Orchestra".

Gaming can wait a week for Wah Wah Jen Jen.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-40144437265057347682010-08-08T16:33:00.000-07:002010-08-08T16:33:02.026-07:00And the wizard stayed in the pub!Friday saw Adelle feeling more like playing hostess to Carina, so the teams were Lachies' Lizard and my Empire V Tom's Chaos & Nathan's Night Goblins, each army at 750 points.

We played "Early Morning Battle" #2, with deployment being randomised by zone: left flank, centre or right flank. The naughtiness alliance won the choice, and wisely stayed away from the buildings, and got a reasonably well spaced deployment. The lizards went first and took the centre, while the Empire filled in the holes, and seemed to be obsessed with the pub located on the left flank!

One the battle got rolling, their were a few feints and fiddles, with a detachement of swordsmen playing the feint game to fail charge some warhouds, but the traffic jam it casued was at the expense of less cannon shots. Hard to say if the trade was worth it.

The Saurus got stuck into the goblins, slightly worn down by missile fire, and got them running away. The humans stayed in the pub, waiting for the Chaos Warriors to arrive. On the left, a thin frontage Saurus broke some Marauders.

In the magic and shooting, a shaman ripped apart a Scar veteran hero, and kept away some charging. After Turn two the skink priest had taken out the Wizard of Tzeench by 'wind bumping' him into nearby units, and zapping him with burning head, and the shaman's were turned around and destroyed by mortar fire.

However, around turn three, the Trolls came to play, and the Warriors started getting their charges. The trolls were machines, smashing Saurus units and taking back the accumulated banners. By the end, all the gobbos had run and the trolls were sitting around wrapped in FIVE banners. Easily a man of the match performance.

Out on the empire left flank, the Warriors hit the pub. 8th Ed has some 'ten on ten' rules for building combat, and the Warriors ripped apart the first ten halberdiers without a return blow being thrown. Luckily the 25 halberdiers outnumbered the 10 Warriors even after the carnage, and made their steadfast leadership roll. We claimed that they were to drunk to know what was going on, and were piling out the windows and off the roof, and the door was too jammed with corpses for the Warriors to get in!

A fifteen Skink javelins units did good work, taking out Hounds, peppering some Warriors, and keeping the Priest alive.

After the game I looked at my army and found I had made a tactical error - I had a second wizard, who I forgot to roll for, and forgot to field. We decided that he must have enjoyed the pub too much, and passed out under a table and enjoyed a good nap.

The traffic jam was declared a good tactic, as there were about 250 points more "Good guys" left at the end. However, the trolls recoving all the gobbo banners, and holding two Sarus Banners, and the Warriors holding the pub Halberdiers banners seem to give the balance. We calculated at the old rule of 100 points per banner. This is a handy win of 50 points to the naughtiness alliance.

The next day, Tom was reading the rules, and banners are only worth 25 points, which turned it back to 175 point victory to the good guys.

We all had a great time, and want to do it again.

Practicalities seem to mean that we are going to split into two types of games - "Adult" night, where we play larger games at our place and go later, and "Kids" nights at Toms where we start earlier and play smaller points, with a roughly fortnightly rotations.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-90872643162327576862010-08-04T16:51:00.000-07:002010-08-04T16:51:11.196-07:00Lizards constructed - now 750 Friday night fightThe Lizardmen are all constructed, and I started weaponing up the old bowman skinks. 15 of the little tackers have now been converted and may even get a jersey on Friday.

Friday night fight - The magic number is 750points, and the guest is Angus. His army was not revealed, and there will be some combination of the usual suspects, Adelle Empire, Lachie Lizards, and Jez's Orcs.

Last week no-one had a good answer to the Black Orcs, so this week we will roll out the artillery! Adelle will have two cannon and a mortar, two racks of ten handgunners, a mage and the change in full command halberdiers.

Lachies Lizards are going lean and hitty. Saurus hero and full command leading 15 Saurus, a ten block with champ, a block of 15 skink warriors, and a lvl 1 priest.

Bring the biff!Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-68130835825276550742010-08-03T22:21:00.000-07:002010-08-03T22:21:38.360-07:00My current project: Mixed Editions LizardmenIn many GW army releases, their is the popular army, and the unpopular army. If you feel like collecting the unpopular army, you can get 'half sets' or 'double half sets' at a steep discount.

Warhammer a few editions ago released Brettonians and Lizardmen as the base armies. Well, knights in shining armour are popular, lizards less so. The pull of Liazrdmen is usually thos who love dinosaurs - there were no dinosaurs in the basic box. What were they thinking?

The net result was that people would buy the (then) $100 starter box, and would look for someone to grab the unwanted Lizards, usually for around $20. This neatly suited my "No more than $1 per model" philosophy, scoring 40 figures for that $20. I did this twice, and later supplemented this with an ebay '100 skinks for $20'
bid, and a 10 Lizards for $5.

I later supplemented this with helping Agro win a Cancon bid buy chipping in for some fantasy components, scoring a much later edition Warhammer core troops box of Lizardmen for about $20.

Net result: 70 Sauraus Warriors and 120 skinks for $65

What has that got to do with Today? Well with the recent Warhammer Fantasy push that has happened recently, L want to play Lizardmen, so I am neatening up and completing all the old projects related to that army. The core box is being completed, with four full commands. Also many of the skinks (which in the old edition were all archers) are being converted into javileneers with shield, using paperclip javelins.

I have also made a few green stuff 'jungle swarms' and I many attempt to sculpt a few more of those before the green stuff I acquired recently ages poorly.

Net result - The basics of a Lizardmen army, $65 and some quite enjoyable hobby fidddle time.

The other cost: Carting it around a dozen sharehouses :)Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-71982413847243380972010-08-01T17:56:00.000-07:002010-08-01T17:56:11.334-07:00The basics of paintingJez's Black Orcs were assembled and undercoated, but showed no likelihood of getting any further. So we did a little pushing, and strongly suggested a painting session. Once underway, everyone else joined in. Jez didn't want his black orcs to be the first ones on the trial. So we did the basics first few passes on a tactical squad to show the very basic techniques.

The lessons were basics like brush care, brush loading, and keeping only the bottom third of the tip in contact with paint. The figures were already assembled and undercoated black. So first stop was drybrushing the figure bone, with Jez and I doing the squad. By this point Lach and Adelle were keen as well, so I started dishing out the jobs. Lachy was doing the green painting and brown inking on the bases, Adelle was doing the metallics (guns and swords) while Jez and I were on base coating things red. We got through the squad quickly, and then I did the details. It only took a little over an hour, and everyone had a job that suited their interest levels and skills.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-79172886457775864322010-07-30T07:49:00.000-07:002010-07-30T07:49:46.942-07:00Green is best! The scenario was capture the fortress. A lizardmen cohort held the fort, and Triksiliksi the skink priest convinced the goblin shaman Zogzog that they were green enough, and the bashing would be good. The Tzeenchian sorcerer Gamile similarly trick a local Empire Garrison to help him capture the fortress.

The Human alliance went straight to business, closing in on the fort, with the marksmen firing poorly, and the mortar rounds exploding harmlessly mid air. The Greenies similarly moved in, with their spells making more headway, halving a warrior of Chaos unit.

Next turn the mortar took more of a toll, the purple sun spell hurt the lizardmen sorely, and the guns whittled more Orcs. The warriors of chaos were repulsed by the skink skirmishers occupying the building, The greenskins tried countercharge, but were caught in the water. Triksiliksi tried to save the day with powerful magics, but blasted his own intelligence instead, and wandered around the field dazed.

A Lizardmen block was destroyed by the Chaos warriors, and their brothers made it into the fort. Only to be blasted out by the Orcs.

Then Black Orks blasted through the ranked Halberdiers, taking eight kills on the first impact. The Warriors saw the last of the Saurus fall, but failed to turn on the building in time. As the day ended, the Orcs held the fort, and the forces of Mankind left the field to return another day.Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-36591308300817225152010-07-27T16:02:00.000-07:002010-07-27T16:02:14.717-07:00Friday Night Fight! It looks like Friday night is shaping up as fight night! The house in some semblance of order, so now we are getting into our routines. And one routine we want to establish is Fight Night!

The plan is that during the week we plan a battle with teams and points, for playing on Friday night.

This week week are fighting an allied battle. 500 points per player, two players a side. Adelle Empire, Jez Orcs, Lachy Lizardmen, and either myself with Empire, or Tom with Warriors of Chaos.

Ready?Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-3141968390736290552010-07-27T15:43:00.000-07:002010-07-27T15:43:33.019-07:00Mini Apocalypse 40k Experiment: Bart's Orks V Sui's TerminatorsSunday night fight was a bit of a thought experiment - What does it take for the Orks to bust the Imperials hardest armour?

Sui took a Land Raider and 2 lots of five Terminators and one lot of ten. I took three Kopters with rockets, 10 boys with rokkit and Nob with power Klaw in a rokkit truck x2, and one mob of 30 Orks with 3 rokkits and Ghazgul.

The scene was a building littered desert.

On the way in, the raider retreated to a corner to take up a clean firing position, and boomed a truck, and thinned boys. Turn two it did similar, but started taking rokkits. Well, 5 to hit, 6 to pen and 5 to make the table mean anything meant that it took some doing. The Orks never wavered - I never failed a leadership roll all game. And Sui had industrially awful reserve rolls.

In a perfect experiment, the Orks all got to pound away with rokkits, and eventually Power Klaws. The Raider took until turn 3 to immobilise, and turn 5 to Pop, and that took Ghazguls s5 Power Klaw.

The termies popping out from the raider caused good rollicking carnage, and the boys gave back. They dispatched them over two turns. One lot of five had a terminal teleporter accident, and the ten man squad ended up out of close combat, arriving turn 5.

So in the end, I lost three points - one lot of truck boys, Ghaghulls 30 mates, and the kopters. Sui lost the teleporter 5, the raider, and it's passenger 5.

So the game was a tie, but that took insane luck with the six ones for the reserve rolls, and the teleporter deaths.
I got to take my partner Adelle and Tom, a long term friend of hers through their first games last Friday. There were mistakes a plenty, but a good games was had. It was about 650 points.

The Empire fielded 5 knight with a similarly armed Captain on horse, 10 handgunners with sniper, and an infantry block, 10 swordsmen, 20 spears, 10 bows and a lvl 1 Fire Wizard. The lizards had a 10 and a 20 infantry block, a 10 blowpipe skink contingent, 3 blocks of jungle swarms, and a lvl2 Skink shaman.

The scenery was a nearly mirrored field - river through the middle, two buildings just off centre. They faced off one to one.

The knights charged the warrior ten block, and did no wounds, and lost three knights. They fled, and came back just in time to knock the 10 under half, but not survive.

The handgunners got into position, but got jumped by the skinks quicker weapons, which caused a break. They made it back, and helped the fire wizard blow away their little rivals later in the match.

In the big blocks battle, the lizardmen got caught in the river. The bowmen REALLY earned their points, peppering away two or three lizards each time, whittling perfectly. The swarm went straight in, and contacted the swordsmen. The swordsmen actually saw them off over three turns, surprising me a little. Once the lizardmen did impact the spearmen, they were a bit too few, and due to the fact that they were late, the swordsmen got to counter charge.

The Liazardmen never broke, but they got ground down.

In the magical battle, the shaman killed the wizard, but the wizard more than earned his points late in the game, knocking over skinks and more lizadmen.

In the end, the victory point difference was 117, a minor victory to Adelle. Tom promises revenge!Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059687986945326620.post-4849318208946278782010-07-01T01:10:00.000-07:002010-07-01T01:10:30.379-07:00The Original StoryThe Womble and I were setting up BUMFAT (Brisbane's ultimate medieval fair and tournament, boy did they hate it when we started including the ultimate) and had finished setting up the SCA encampment. SCA puts in a solid attempt to be medieval. We dodn't always manage all that much, but we strive, and sometimes we can shine.

Well, we ran into some guys who were having a ball of a time, swinging swords around, wearing armour, and generally convincing other people to join them, especially hot chicks. Said hot chicks liked to swing swords around wearing very small lycra suits. Nothing wrng with that AT ALL, but it's not medieval.

Anyway, back to the story. After setting up, we went along to see these other guys setting up their display tent. It was a massive square army tent. To medievalize/ fantasize it a bit more, they had decorated it with fake human skulls on each of the points, lots of attached branches, a few banners, and a huge bull skull over the main peak. Womble and I were looking at this quietly, trying to come up with an encouraging phrase.

The guy from the group came up to us and said "Yeah I know" in an upset tone. We looked at him, and looked at the tent. "Needs more skulls."Ysambarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02360071758069381121noreply@blogger.com0
